2005 Château Franc-Cardinal Bordeaux
Silver Medal Winner - 2007 Vignerons Independants
The proprietor of Château Franc-Cardinal, Philip Holzberg, the self-styled Earl du Cardinal, considers his wines to be defined by elegance and grace. One sip of the Château Franc-Cardinal will show you that this is not just talk. The Earl was also immensely proud as the Vignerons Independants, an association of independent growers and wine makers awarded his 2005 vintage a silver medal at the tastings. Essentially an award given by his peers, Holzberg couldn't be more proud. Made using classic Bordeaux grapes, the wine shows off everything that makes a Bordeaux stupendous. Deeply perfumed, to the point of being seductively feminine, this Bordeaux makes a great first impression. The strong and aromatic nose hints of fruit, namely cherries and the oak aging makes itself known on the nose. The fruit is balanced on the palate but soft and supple tannins that serve to complement and emphasize the fruit but never to dominate it entirely. Overall, this creates a wine that has a silky texture that can truly be called seductive. This exceptional Bordeaux should pair brilliantly with the food classically paired with their ilk: robust meat dishes perhaps lamb most fittingly.
